Commute across the River Mersey on a Mersey Ferry

A cross-river journey on the iconic Mersey Ferry only takes ten minutes, and we might be biased but we think it’s the most relaxing and stress free way to commute. The humming sound of the engine, the gentle waves on the river, birds flying by and amazing views will help to clear your mind and set you up for the day ahead.

There’s also plenty of space on board the ferry for commuters to spread out. You can sit on the top deck and appreciate the incredible views of Liverpool’s beautiful skyline, or you can sit inside on the bottom deck and enjoy the scenery in the warmth.

What do our regulars think?

Mersey Ferries commuters are a loyal bunch, so we asked one of our regulars Sue, who has commuted by ferry for over six years, why she takes the Ferry ‘Cross the Mersey:

“I’ve always loved the ferries and for me, it’s the only way to commute.

It’s the perfect way to start the day, completely stress free. Fabulous sunrises, uncrowded and as much fresh air as you can handle. I love seeing the other ships on the river, the seabirds and the occasional harbour porpoise.

Coming home is time to clear your head and unwind. I enjoy taking in the scenery and listening to the waves.”

We also caught up with Alison, who travels from Wirral to Liverpool five days a week. Here’s what she had to say about her commute on the Mersey Ferry:

“The morning commute is such a peaceful way to start the day. The service is every 20 minutes, so you never wait very long and part of the fun is watching the boat make its way over to pick you up.

Watching the sunrise over Liverpool as you sail across is a stunning way to start the day. If the weather is good you can stand on the top deck and just take that 10 minutes it takes to cross to enjoy the moment.

There is no pushing and jostling to get on a busy train or bus, getting on and off the Ferry is very calm and orderly. Most of all I love that 10 minutes of me time each way. It is a lovely chilled way to start the day and a great way to unwind at the end of the day.”

Why should you try the ferry?

The ferry is the perfect choice if you’re looking to switch up your daily commute. It’s a great way to travel and experience the very best of Liverpool every single day. Take in the views and blow away the cobwebs after a hectic day at work.

If you are thinking about cycling for part of your commute, there’s plenty of space on the lower deck for bikes. You’ll get to meet lots of other cyclists and lovely passengers that use the ferry too – perfect!

If you buy a Flexi, Monthly or Quarterly Direct Cross-river (Commuter) Ticket please ask one of our friendly staff members in the terminal for more information about free parking at Seacombe Ferry Terminal. The commuter car parking area is within the rear car park and will be signposted.

Mersey Ferries Commuter Service runs from 07:20am until 09:40am every morning and from 5pm-6.40pm at night, check out our Commuter page for times and prices.

Take a moment out from your busy life, breathe in the fresh air, relax and enjoy. It’s the best commute in Merseyside (yeah, we are biased, but the ferry is boss).
