A milestone three years in the making, the new Royal Daffodil has completed her first basin test – and it was nothing short of spectacular.

Earlier this week, we gathered at Cammell Laird’s Birkenhead Shipyard to witness a moment that blends maritime heritage, innovation, and community pride – the basin testing of the Royal Daffodil.

Basin testing is the point where the vessel first touches the water to test her propulsion, steering, and safety systems. It’s one of the final steps before she officially becomes part of the Mersey Ferries fleet.

Standing proudly on the quay were the people who’ve brought this project to life, including Mayor Steve Rotheram, who has championed investment in cleaner, modern public transport.

“This Royal Daffodil is more than a vessel,” said Mayor Rotheram. “She represents our region’s future transport network – green, sustainable and best-in-class.”

Also in attendance were the future captains who will soon be sailing the Royal Daffodil across the River Mersey. Trained, proud, and full of local pride, they’ll be the next generation to carry forward the long-standing and unique part of the city region transport network.

What's next?

With basin testing successfully completed, Royal Daffodil moves on to final outfitting and certification before entering service. Passengers can look forward to a more accessible, low-emission, and modern ferry that still pays homage to its rich history.
