At Mersey Ferries, we’re proud to be part of a story that’s more than 800 years in the making.
Thirty-year-old Ellie Vondy is on course to become the first female captain in the iconic ferry’s long and celebrated history – a milestone moment not just for our service, but for our entire region.
Born and raised in Anfield, Ellie grew up with the River Mersey woven into her life. After studying marine biology and project management, and qualifying as a diver, she spent years working on research projects at sea. But it was being out on the water – not behind a desk – that truly captured her imagination.
When the opportunity arose to join Mersey Ferries as a marine apprentice in September 2025, she didn’t hesitate.
Now partway through a three-year apprenticeship, Ellie works onboard our vessels while studying part-time at Fleetwood Marine College. Once qualified, she will become Officer of the Watch (Near Coastal), serving as First Mate before undertaking a further year of training to gain her captain’s licence.
“It’s been amazing working on something so iconic,” Ellie says. “It’s like joining a little family – there are people here who’ve dedicated years to the ferry.
“When I was younger, I spent days out with family by the sea, in places like New Brighton and West Kirby. I’ve always loved the water. When I saw this job come up, I just applied for it.
“It’s so exciting to think I could be the first woman to captain the Mersey Ferry. I’m a Liverpool girl and the ferry is part of the city’s heartbeat – if I am, I just hope I do women justice.”
The Ferry ‘Cross the Mersey is a symbol recognised around the world. For centuries, however, the maritime industry has been traditionally male-dominated. Ellie’s journey represents a powerful shift, one that reflects our wider commitment to opportunity and inclusion.
That commitment was recognised when we were crowned Diversity Champion at the Mersey Maritime Industry Awards 2025.
Ellie is working towards the top job alongside fellow marine apprentices, gaining hands-on experience while developing the skills needed to lead from the bridge.
By investing in apprenticeships that allow our team to learn, grow and progress within their roles, we’re building future talent from within. It strengthens our service, supports long-term succession planning and ensures the Mersey Ferry continues to thrive for generations to come.
This year also marks another exciting milestone for us, as we prepare to welcome our first new vessel in more than 60 years.
The £26m Royal Daffodil will soon enter service, offering a world-class experience for commuters, visitors and eventgoers alike. With large open-plan decks, intimate event spaces for corporate functions and private parties, and a programme of new seasonal cruises, the vessel represents the future of our historic fleet.
As we look ahead to welcoming Royal Daffodil onboard, we’re equally excited about what the future holds on the bridge.
For Ellie – and for Mersey Ferries – the next chapter could be truly historic.
