Ashes Scatterings
Please note that from 1 September 2026, our ashes scattering service will be temporarily paused while we carry out a review of some of services. We understand how meaningful this service is to many people, and it will remain available until 31 August 2026 on the 10:00am and 11:00am sailings. We will share further updates as soon as we can.
If you are looking for somewhere to scatter the ashes of a loved one, Mersey Ferries can help. We offer you the opportunity to scatter ashes over the River Mersey from a dedicated area aboard a Mersey Ferry.
This is available on weekdays and weekends. Scatterings are available at the following times (subject to availability):
Monday- Friday: 10.00am and 11.00am sailings from Liverpool Gerry Marsden, Pier Head, Liverpool
Monday - Friday: 10:20am and 11.20am sailings from Seacombe, Wirral
Weekends - 10.00am and 11.00am sailings from Liverpool Gerry Marsden, Pier Head, Liverpool
Weekends - 10.20am and 11.20am sailings from Seacombe, Wirral
Ashes scatterings take place in a quiet and private area of the vessel, and we kindly ask that this is booked in advance so we can support you on the day.
During the 50-minute cruise, the Captain will pause the engines for a few minutes to allow time for reflection, for you to scatter the ashes and say any words you wish, with a member of our crew there to gently assist you.
You are welcome to bring flowers to place in the water, but we ask that all plastic and wrapping is removed. Any tributes or urns should be biodegradable.
There is no additional charge for ashes scatterings; however, we ask that each guest has a River Explorer Cruise ticket, which can be paid for on the day at the terminal. The area for ashes scatterings comfortably holds up to 20 people, larger parties will be accommodated around the sides of the ferry.
If you wish to book, please email [email protected] with your preferred date, time, contact number and the number of people attending. Please note that this service is available by pre-booking only and tickets cannot be purchased through the Mersey Ferries website.

We are writing to thank everyone involved with Mersey Ferries for their support, care and kindness for our family and friends who gathered to scatter our mother Olive’s ashes from the Royal Iris last Sunday. The crew were simply wonderful, and it made the moment even more moving and memorable for us. Thank you!
